Your recovery phrase is generated on your device and never sent anywhere. Lose the device, and the phrase restores everything on a new one. Lose the phrase, and there is no way back — we never see it, which is exactly what makes it yours.

An index fund that follows the whole market. A few shares of a company you believe in. Tokenized stocks and ETFs track the real thing, and when they arrive in Caribou they will sit beside your gold, dollars and coins, under the same key.

Some assets are restricted in some places. Tokenized stocks are issued by a third party, and whether you may acquire or hold them depends on where you live. It is up to you to decide whether an asset that is restricted where you are is appropriate for you.

Questions
Wait — is this crypto?
Yes. Caribou holds digital blockchain assets, including traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, as well as stablecoins and real-world assets (RWAs).
Who actually controls my money?
You do — completely. Your money lives on your own device, and only you can open it. We never hold it and can't access, move, or recover it. That control is yours — and so is the responsibility for keeping your backup safe.
What happens if I lose my backup?
The honest answer: your money becomes unrecoverable. Nobody — including us — can restore it, because nobody else ever had it. This is the trade-off for real ownership, so keep your recovery phrase somewhere safe.
Do I need to show ID or sign up?
No — not to hold or move your own money. There are no accounts and no ID checks. Some optional features may require disclosure of personal information, for example buying assets with a credit card, and some features may be enhanced with opt-in services that ask for your personal information. None of these lower-privacy features are required to use Caribou.
What does Caribou cost?
Caribou is free and open source under the Blue Oak license. The only fees are on-chain transaction fees for sending money, and none of that money comes to us.
Which devices can I use?
Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android are all being prepared for release soon.
Who makes Caribou?
Bisoncraft LLC is made up of the primary developers of Bison Wallet and DCRDEX. While we believe Bison Wallet is a great product, the project was intimately tied to the Decred cryptocurrency and the DCRDEX trading platform. In developing Caribou, we wanted to deliver an app that puts everyday people in full control of their own money, with no company in the middle and no ID checks.
